We got up early and headed to Milan on the train (check the times before you get up - the cheap trains don't run that often! Our tickets were approx. €12 each and it took an hour and 45 minutes, though there is a faster train that was €30+), in order to make getting to the airport the next morning easy. I hadn't budgeted much time for Milan because I had thought it was mostly an industrial city without much to see. However, I wish we had had more time to visit everything! Despite the absolutely pouring rain most of the day, we saw the breathtaking Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, the archeological museum inside/next door, Santa Maria delle Grazie (which has Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper - though you have to get tickets weeks in advance), the Duomo (unfortunately it closed early so we couldn't go inside, but we did do the rooftop tour!), Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Sforzesco Castle.
Our flight left around 11am the next morning, so we got up early to catch a Malpensa Express train (€13, ~40 minutes) from Milano Cardona (we stayed near there, which is also near all the cool stuff in Milan, at a boutique hotel), which runs every hour or so - though of course was delayed (and then broke, so we had to get on another one)... definitely leave earlier than you think you need to!
